Author Sonya Milord gives children an autographed copy of her book "In one day"

On June 30th, 2004, the children in the Family Resource Center, had an opportunity to meet Sonya Milord author of "In One Day" and to receive an autographed copy of the book. This Title I-Miami-Dade County Public School sponsored event, gave the children an opportunity to understand the process of book writing, publishing and to help break some of the stereotypes that children have about what an author looks like. Ms. Milord read a few pages from her book "In One Day", about a little boy named Chubby who has a homework assignment to write a story about life without African American inventors. She was inspired to write this book after trying to help her nephew learn more about African-American History. After failed attempts at finding quality books for him, she decided to write a book that would fill this void. Ms. Milord shared with the children that to write this book took her about 10 months and 13 revisions. She started her own publishing company Tajiri Ventures, LLC. "In One Day" is the premier book from Tajiri Ventures,LLC. When Ms. Milord asked the children, "Do you think I wrote this book?", many of them replied with a no. "Why don't you think that I wrote it?", she asked. Some replied by saying,"We didn't see you write it."

"because you don't wear glasses," "because you are not fat", and "because you are black". She reassured them by saying, " I did write this book, even though I do not wear glasses, and that I am not fat and that I am black. I am just like you. Any one of you could be a writer or do anything that you want to do with your life."
